Professional Development
Grow in Your Career
Along with the great career opportunities Maine jobs provide, you’ll also encounter limitless opportunities for professional development. Whether you’re looking to advance your education at one of the County’s three post-secondary institutions (NMCC, UMPI, UMFK), learn on the job in connection with one of our many trade schools or through the Maine Apprenticeship Program, or network while learning (Leadership Aroostook, Momentum Aroostook, Young Professionals Institute), numerous experiences to grow await you in Aroostook.

Leadership Aroostook is a professional development program created by the Aroostook Partnership in conjunction with Husson University’s Institute for Strategic Leadership and Workforce Development. The goal of the program is to help prepare high potential managers for more responsibility, impact, and effectiveness in leading their organizational teams and departments. Starting in the fall, the program consists of nine in-person monthly classes, readings, written assignments, and a culminating team project that is presented to local business leaders. Class topics include critical thinking and decision making, strategic planning, leadership, and financial management.
Dr. Kiersten Purington, President & CEO, Aroostook Partnership feels that the program provides significant value to both employees and employers. “Leadership Aroostook empowers professionals with the knowledge, leadership skills, and regional connections needed to grow their careers while strengthening the organizations they serve. Graduates return with new ideas, greater confidence, and the ability to make an immediate impact—often leading to stronger retention, increased engagement, and advancement into leadership roles.”

The Young Professionals Institute is an 8-week professional development short course that helps participants who are young in their careers hone their professional skills through hands-on activities, on-the-spot public speaking assignments, and business simulation exercises. Along the way, participants complete collaborative assignments and hear presentations by embedded guests from the public and private sector. The Institute culminates in a showcase presentation before area business and community leaders, and past YPI graduates. Hosted by the University of Maine at Presque Isle and MMG Insurance, YPI has provided training to area professionals for more than a decade.
