Aroostook County recently gained not just a new resident, but a much-needed boost to its skilled labor force. Calvin and Ana Episcopo relocated from Martha’s Vineyard to Aroostook County in December 2024. Calvin, a seasoned craftsman with over a decade of experience in custom home construction, established Episcopo Services in the Houlton area, aiming to address the pressing demand for skilled tradespeople in the region.
Aroostook County, like much of Maine, faces a significant shortage of construction workers. With nearly 20% of construction professionals aged 55 or older and many nearing retirement, the gap in available skilled labor is widening. A December report from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce highlighted that Maine has only 42 available workers for every 100 job openings, underscoring the critical need for qualified tradespeople. Calvin’s arrival couldn’t have been more timely. One local resident, Kami Higgins Horch of Houlton, praised Calvin’s work on her bathroom’s beadboard ceiling and crown molding. She noted, “He showed up on the day he said he would, his craftsmanship was top-notch. He stuck to his estimate.” Such testimonials reflect the community’s appreciation for dependable and skilled service providers. Beyond his technical skills, Calvin’s integration into the community has been seamless. “Almost the first day we came here we went to the Co-op and the Gateway Ambassadors gave us a welcome packet,” Ana shared. “It was filled with gifts like a T-shirt.”
Their decision to relocate north was driven by a love of the outdoors and a deep appreciation for Maine’s rugged beauty. “Everyone here is so incredibly nice,” said Calvin. “The other thing I really appreciate about coming here, we love the outdoors and it is just so beautiful in the great North. In 2020 I did a backpacking trip to Mt. Katahdin and I immediately fell in love with northern Maine.”
With its stunning natural surroundings, tight-knit communities, and a growing need for skilled hands, Aroostook is proving to be more than just a scenic place to live—it’s a land of opportunity. And for Calvin Episcopo, it’s a place to build not just homes, but a future.
